This December, you may be surprised to see a daily journey taking place between homes in Longniddry. This trek involves a very tiny woman named Mary, an equally small Joseph and their donkey.
This strange and wonderful procession around various local houses is a celebration of “Posada”, the Mexican festival of “the inn”. Hundreds of years ago, Mexican children would dress up as these two famous travellers, going from door to door, as though looking for a resting place. Today, churches enact the scene with wooden figures from a Nativity set, going day by day from home to home.
It’s a simple enough idea, though one which can help us reflect on the season of Advent and what it means for Christ to be born into our lives.
Look out for two minuscule strangers and their four-legged friend, anywhere from Canty Grove to Wemyss Road. And if you see them, remember to give them a welcome.
We have a wide selection of services through Advent and Christmas, with something to suit every age group. Please pay special attention to the timing and venues for our services from Christmas Day through to Sunday 10th January. All are taking place at 11am, with the usual 9.45am pattern returning from 17th January onwards.
With all good wishes for a lovely Advent, a merry Christmas and a happy and peaceful new year. |
